As I said before, sometimes, it is great to take a break from whatever your profession is, and especially if you live in Utah, you have to experience Sundance Movie Festival.
Movies we have seen the second weekend. And, opinions of five people: myself, my husband, his sister, her boyfriend, and my brother. They visited us from San Diego, Redondo Beach and Las Vegas. The Sundance movie festival rating includes: 4 rates: fair, ok?, good, and best.
January 24, Thursday-World Documentary-"The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo"-Women's bodies have always been a wartime battleground. Since the war started in REpublic of Congo, rape is happening on systematic and unimaginable scale. Lisa Jackson is bringing her camera into the eyes of the storm. rate is fair. My husband and I thought it is not quite appropriete for Lisa to share her own gang-rape story. Even though it is horrible and can be a movie story line on its own how and why rape happens in America, for instance, there is no war on United States land now, and compare with what Congo women are going through is not acceptable. We stayed for Q&A. Lisa answered questions very slowly, and talking down sometimes, and at the end either intentionally or not made it sound as if all men's dream to rape a women. That was the end of my husband's patience.
January 25, Friday (my Birthday)-Dramatic Competition-"The Wackness"-hip-hop is permeating white youth culture, and pot-dealing loser kid, Luke Shapiro is trying to figure out how to solve his parents' insolvency, beat depression, and get laid. rate is best. Dr. Squires is a great character, you can relate to this pot-dealer, and all problems young and older people are going through. Very nice movie.
January 26, Saturday-Premiers-"Incendiary"-based on a novel released 2 days before the London bombing, Incendiary is a comtemporary portrait of England that deftly interweaves tragedy, sex, politics, and grief. The rate is ok? I like Michelle Williams in it. The movie was slow and not realistic dialogues were happening at time. I think everone in our group would give the lowest point except me.
-Premiers-"Dimished Capacity"-after concussion leaves the main character unfocused, Cooper, Chicago newspaper editor travels from hom to Missouri to visit his aging unle Rollie. It is probably the longest and the most boring movie I have seen at the Sundance this year at least even though it was actually only 92 minutes. This movie proves that it is not enough to have great and/or famous actors in the movie (Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda, Virginia Madsen, and Dylan Baker) if your writting is sucks. We all gave the lowest rate except my husband (slightly higher rate) because he was amused a little with baseball card storyline.
-Premiers-"Assasination of High School President"-Director's (Brett Simon) debute is a intricately crafted high school drama that strays from the typical teenage fare and manages to keep what at first seems like a familiar plot twisting and turning until the very last frame. I do not know what this new director did to attract Bruce Willis, but the movie was great, and other young actors were good in it. We all liked it. The highest rate. I would say though I had a slightly more difficult time to relate because I think I did not go to high school in this country. The movie made me want to watch "China Town".
We ended this weekend on the high note as well as previous one. It is my 4th festival and my husband's sixth. We hope to continue this nice tradition.
